Sharpton / Hitchens Debate - Can Morality Exist Without God?

Description:

Complete video at: http://fora.tv/fora/showthread.php?t=1007 Author Christopher Hitchens debates the Reverend Al Sharpton on the question of whether morality can exist in the absence of God. ----- A Debate: God Is Not Great with Al Sharpton and Christopher Hitchens. Taking on possibly the greatest issue of our time - the malignant force of religion in the world - Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion through a close and learned reading of the major religious texts, citing numerous historical instances in which sexual repression and outrageous acts of violence have been committed in the name of God. He argues for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix. -- NYPL Christopher Hitchens is an author, journalist and literary critic. Now living in Washington, D.C., he has been a columnist at Vanity Fair, The Nation and Slate; additionally, he is an occasional contributor to many other publications. Al Sharpton Jr. is a Pentecostal minister, a political activist, civil rights activist and film actor. In recent years, Sharpton has also become a perennial candidate in his quest for the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States. Author of "Go and Tell Pharaoh: The Autobiography of the Reverend Al Sharpton."

I have never heard him say so directly, but I think he supports the Iraq war because he perceives it as a religious war. He does understand that if we do not destroy the fundamentalist islamic movement it will destroy us. Same goes for the fundie Xtian movement in the U.S. They are both the enemies of humanity.

Yes he does feel that the Iraq war is a religious war and that it must be fought because religion is driving it. Athiesm is his specialty, so I wouldn't expect him to know about Israel policy or settlements or palestinian oppression. I wouldn't expect him to know that the driving force is an neocon Israel policy. But then, hitchens himself is a neocon so what do you expect.

Power corrupts. All Govt(s) of the world have not been given a fair chance because in all cases the rich shielded themselves from the poor and a big gaping wound was torn out betweeen them. Noeone wants to confront the ugly truth of have and have not, so they'd rather blame eachother than to admit that life is uncaring/merciless. Our measure of overpopulation is death and misery. Here again, we ignore the truth because noeone wants to admit that there're real limits to what we can do.

"Since HITCHENS STILL supports the war in Iraq, even tho it's become an unmitigated disaster, & since in Palestine he selectively avoids examples of *Israeli* (or in Iraq U.S.) attacks on CIVILIANS, he doesn't want us to analyze the REAL issues in these conflicts (esp'ly the U.S.'s LIES, WESTERN imperialism, JEWISH colonialism & the ISRAEL lobby), so he comes up w RELIGION (esp'ly Islam) as the diversionary blame for evil -- but not Christianity/Judaism for the *U.S.* govt's evil.

Description:

Complete video at: http://fora.tv/fora/showthread.php?t=687 Screenwriter Michael Arndt talks about the major themes present in his Academy Award-winning script for the film "Little Miss Sunshine." ----- In 2000, screenwriter Michael Arndt had no credits, no agents, no publishing history when he took a year off to write "a saleable script" that got him an agent and a deal and, five years after that, one of the big hits of 2006. A new book, "Little Miss Sunshine: The Shooting Script," details the fascinating behind-the-scenes story of the indie runaway hit with an introduction, afterword, and enlightening scene notes from Arndt. Starring Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Abigail Breslin, Paul Dano, and Alan Arkin, the film strikes a nerve with everyone who's ever been awestruck by how their muddled families seem to make it after all. Michael Arndt offers a rare insider's look and considered thoughts on one of the film's most prevalent themes, success vs. failure. -- Cody's Books

One of the best films i've seen in ages... A VERY clever film. The script. the acting, the timing, the silences, the music, almost perfect.Yes it was very funny however it was also moving, and has such depth. Not one character "trod" on the other. They each had their own space and yet conveyed perfect harmony. I do have my favourites(acting wise),thats human, and they are ; the mothers brother, the son,and the little girl.I am totally impressed! Saluti from Roma.

Tao means "the way". 4th Noble Truth in Buddhism is called "Magga", which means to way. Tao says the more you try to change the world the more you ruin it. Buddha disallowed his monks to even talk about politics. Christainity may be political but please do not compare it to genuine holiness. Did not God say: 'Do not covet'.

Jesus was against religion. the only time he got angry is at religious leaders. You dont have to do anything to be ok, you are and always have been perfect for eternity, which is how long we've been around. We are in the middle of the trinity by way of a bond that cant be broken. The ego is barking up the tree of knowledge, and that isnt the answer. All that exists is life(love). Science says there are no absolutes, buddha says we are the observer(holy spirit).

Religious leaders say you have to do something to be ok, jesus said just believe you are and you are. The mind will lie, the heart dosent. The physical is a manifestation of belief, for belief is an action. What you believe is the way. Jesus said the way is to love yourself unconditionally and you automatically love god and your neighbor, there is no difference, its all the same thing.

Jesus was adam, Melchesidek, and a couple of other people. He was a buddha, but christians will never admit that. He was a wine bibber, hung out with drug addicts and prostitutes and fishermen. He broke every jewish law, just to say none of this religiosity matters. He was concerned with the dream in everyones heart for security, identity, and belonging. He spoke in parables, and i'm convinced the decription of hell is a parable

Is it just me, or does Evil's tatoos resemble a 4 year olds crayon-wall scribble? Seriosly, I have this cat who pukes up an orangey black hair ball daily, and every time I scoop it up and chase my wifey around the house, I think "This is one of Evil's tatoos" Really.

Amber hasn't been the most loyal person in the house (i.e., Nick). Dick and Dani ARE against Dustin and Amber. Dick has said it many times.

He has something up his sleeve and I bet it has to do with him voting to evict Kail and having Jess and Jam keep their votes to evict Kail as well. He has nothing to lose, because next week he can just put up D&D (even if he did give them his word). He doesn't like them, he doesn't trust their closeness w/Zach and Jen.

"I will lead the conversation" ?! Ah hell naw, I'd have to slap his ass. Anyway, I don't believe Dustin cares whether Amber keeps her word or not (after having sworn on her daughters life) and why should he care if Eric has an extra vote to be evicted.
