Complete video at: http://fora.tv/fora/showthread.php?t=1007 Author Christopher Hitchens debates the Reverend Al Sharpton on the question of whether morality can exist in the absence of God. ----- A Debate: God Is Not Great with Al Sharpton and Christopher Hitchens. Taking on possibly the greatest issue of our time - the malignant force of religion in the world - Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion through a close and learned reading of the major religious texts, citing numerous historical instances in which sexual repression and outrageous acts of violence have been committed in the name of God. He argues for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble telescope's awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix. -- NYPL Christopher Hitchens is an author, journalist and literary critic. Now living in Washington, D.C., he has been a columnist at Vanity Fair, The Nation and Slate; additionally, he is an occasional contributor to many other publications. Al Sharpton Jr. is a Pentecostal minister, a political activist, civil rights activist and film actor. In recent years, Sharpton has also become a perennial candidate in his quest for the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States. Author of "Go and Tell Pharaoh: The Autobiography of the Reverend Al Sharpton." |

KevinBernal ::: Favorites I have never heard him say so directly, but I think he supports the Iraq war because he perceives it as a religious war. He does understand that if we do not destroy the fundamentalist islamic movement it will destroy us. Same goes for the fundie Xtian movement in the U.S. They are both the enemies of humanity. 07-08-12 13:11:59 _____________________________________________________
KevinBernal ::: Favorites nubiancerebra: Those atheists who have committed atrocities did so for reason OTHER THAN atheism. The religious fanatics did so BECAUSE OF religion. That is the difference that those blinded by religion are so unwilling to admit or address in debate. 07-08-12 13:21:16 _____________________________________________________
90mrvn ::: Favorites correction there's a difference between disicpline and beating the stuffing out of your child. 07-08-12 14:41:02 _____________________________________________________
ColdVein ::: Favorites Don't need a debate to discover the answer to this question is yes, and anyone who disagrees is a cretin. 07-08-12 18:07:22 _____________________________________________________
90mrvn ::: Favorites tru alot of religious people have done terrible things. Buh tht doesnt mean god doesn't exist. 07-08-13 05:27:17 _____________________________________________________
johan28 ::: Favorites Yes he does feel that the Iraq war is a religious war and that it must be fought because religion is driving it. Athiesm is his specialty, so I wouldn't expect him to know about Israel policy or settlements or palestinian oppression. I wouldn't expect him to know that the driving force is an neocon Israel policy. But then, hitchens himself is a neocon so what do you expect. 07-08-13 15:01:59 _____________________________________________________
johan28 ::: Favorites Power corrupts. All Govt(s) of the world have not been given a fair chance because in all cases the rich shielded themselves from the poor and a big gaping wound was torn out betweeen them. Noeone wants to confront the ugly truth of have and have not, so they'd rather blame eachother than to admit that life is uncaring/merciless. Our measure of overpopulation is death and misery. Here again, we ignore the truth because noeone wants to admit that there're real limits to what we can do. 07-08-13 15:11:39 _____________________________________________________
nubiancerebra ::: Favorites "Since HITCHENS STILL supports the war in Iraq, even tho it's become an unmitigated disaster, & since in Palestine he selectively avoids examples of *Israeli* (or in Iraq U.S.) attacks on CIVILIANS, he doesn't want us to analyze the REAL issues in these conflicts (esp'ly the U.S.'s LIES, WESTERN imperialism, JEWISH colonialism & the ISRAEL lobby), so he comes up w RELIGION (esp'ly Islam) as the diversionary blame for evil -- but not Christianity/Judaism for the *U.S.* govt's evil. 07-08-14 04:46:26 _____________________________________________________
nubiancerebra ::: Favorites The religious fanatics did so BECAUSE OF RELIGIOUS IDEOLOGIES. Atheists who have committed atrocities did so BECAUSE OF ATHEIST IDEOLOGIES. And at the time of their atrocities in the West they (atheist, Christian -- or Jewish, the people who also went an entire continent away to take away another people's land) were/are not regarded as "finatics". 07-08-14 05:00:01 _____________________________________________________
nubiancerebra ::: Favorites Kevin: "if we do not destroy the fundamentalist islamic movement it will destroy us." OH MY 'GOD', YOU'RE A *NUT*! I wish I had read this before I bothered to reply to your other comment. BIN LADEN GAVE SEVERAL *VERY SPECIFIC* PRACTICAL REASONS FOR APPROVING OF THE 9-11 ATTACKS -- *NOT* A ONE OF THEM INVOLVED RELIGION. WE NEED TO WORRY MORE ABOUT THE XTIAN & *JEWISH* (RELIGIOUS & POLITICAL) FUND'LISTS/IMPERIALISTS/COLONIALISTS IN THE US *PROVOKING* MORE 9-11'S. 07-08-14 05:13:52 _____________________________________________________ |
