Description:

7/17/07 -- MSNBC: A new National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) puts al Qa'ida at the top of threats to U.S. interests at home and abroad now and in the foreseeable future. MSNBC terrorism analyst Roger Cressey explains that the NIE is not current threat reporting on attempts already underway; instead it lays out what the overall state of the threat is. In short: "It is an assessment of what the al Qa'ida leadership is up to". The findings are disturbing due to the group reconstituting itself and its renewed functional capabilities that are believed to be at the highest level since 9/11. Part of the NIE analysis speaks to operational connections with other groups in portions of the world such as North Africa and Iraq. These were previously unaffiliated groups that have joined al Qa'ida's cause.
